The Ring Doorbell is one of the most popular smart doorbells. It will record motion events and allow you to see live video of who’s at your door. But have you ever wondered if the Ring will work without Wifi?
Does Ring Work Without Wifi
No. Both the Ring Doorbell and Ring Cameras require a Wifi connection to work. Your Ring camera and doorbell won’t be able to stream live video, have two way audio or record motion events without an active wifi connection.
Why Does Ring Require Wifi
Unlike some smart doorbells which are able to record video locally, the Ring records video to the cloud. So if the devices loses wifi it can no longer send the video to the Ring servers.
If your Ring camera loses access to the wifi it will appear offline.
There are smart doorbells and smart cameras that can record video locally. For example some of the Eufy cameras support an SD card. So even if the Wifi drops connection, it can still record.
Making Sure your Ring has Wifi
One of the most common problems I come across when troubleshooting Ring Cameras is a weak wifi connection. This is because most Ring cameras are placed outside in a location where the Wifi signal is going to be a little weaker.
You can do a Wifi speed test on your phone to see how strong the wifi signal is from where your doorbell is located. Just keep in mind that Wifi radio in your phone is stronger and has a longer range the Wifi chip in the Ring.
Ring sell a Wifi extender which doubles as a doorbell chime. This is the easiest way to boost your Wifi signal. You can also pick up a good Wifi extender for under $50 that will do the same job.
